High-risk and regulated businesses

The rules keep changing, and the business still has to run.

When you sell restricted products or work under strict licensing, the usual marketing playbook breaks, because ad platforms, payment processors and messaging tools often won't touch you. I've run my own store in one of the most regulated categories in Canada since 2015, so I build marketing and operations that keep working inside the rules.

The problem

The tools everyone else uses aren't built for you.

Payment processors, ad platforms and some email and text platforms restrict regulated products, often with little warning and no clear reason. The platform I build email on, for example, doesn't allow firearms-related text messages, so retention for those stores runs on email only. On top of that, the law itself changes, and a product line you built the business on can be gone overnight.

The answer isn't to push against the rules. It's to know them well enough to build channels you control, keep clean records and plan for the next change before it lands.

Who it's for

This fits owner-led businesses in regulated or restricted categories, such as firearm-accessory, hunting and outdoor retailers, other stores selling age-restricted or restricted products, and licensed businesses where the paperwork and records have to be right every time.

Proof: Civil Safety, my own store

Since 2015 I've run Civil Safety, one of Canada's leading firearm-accessory retailers, through constant changes to federal rules. Its customers have included federal, police and defence buyers, and it sells to all 13 provinces and territories with a catalogue of 865 products from 119 brands. Over 93% of sales come from direct and search traffic, repeat customers bring in 23.8% of revenue, the average order is about $200, and 2026 sales are already 12.1% above 2025. Civil Safety is owned and run by my company, so this is my own store and not a client result.

Regulated experience beyond the store

I've also held FSRA mortgage agent licences in Ontario, which taught me how a licensed, closely supervised business has to document its work. I bring that same habit of compliance and risk analysis to every setup, so the records are there when someone asks for them.

How I can help

I don't sell a separate package for this. I use the same services as the rest of the site, set up with your rules in mind:

If you run an online store: start with the Store Audit ($1,500 fixed), which covers platform and payment risk and your email and CASL records, then repeat-customer email that doesn't depend on ad approvals. Online stores →

Operations Audit ($1,500 fixed): I review how the business runs, where the platform and compliance risks sit, and give you a written plan. Details →

Systems and Software Setup: the tools your business runs on, set up so records, consent and paperwork are kept properly, sized to the job. Details →

Hourly Consulting ($150/hour): a second opinion on a specific decision, such as a new platform or a rule change. Details →

A note on legal advice

I'm not a lawyer and I don't give legal advice, so your business stays responsible for its own licences and legal obligations, and I'll tell you when a question needs a lawyer.

Build on channels that won't get pulled out from under you.
